生物填料是生物除臭滤池的核心组成部分,微生物生长于填料表面的生物膜或是悬浮在填料周围的液相中,这些填料提供微生物较大的附着面积。填料的材质及特性是影响滤床效率的主要因素, 其中包括孔隙度、压密度、水份载留能力、及承载微生物族群的能力,所以理想的竹炭作为生物填料的主要特点有如下几个方面:

竹炭填料自身无异味对人体无害,不会对环境造成二次污染。具有一定的吸附能力,普通生物除臭填料主要靠微生物吸附,而竹炭填料与附着在其上的微生物共同吸附降解,生物降解速率加快。
竹炭填料使用寿命长,耐老化;炭质载体耐生物腐蚀,填料本身没有损耗,可长期稳定运行。
竹炭填料价格适宜、容易取得、运行 、维护操作简单。
在竹炭表面形成了由细菌、真菌和原生动物组成的生物膜,生物菌谱广;天然瓦形结构的竹碳具有较高的孔隙率,使废气和生物膜充分接触;竹炭系统的设置,有利于增殖缓慢的微生物如氨化菌、硫化菌、聚磷菌的附着和生长,使系统具有较强的脱氮除磷作用;竹炭对有机污水中悬浮物和胶体的吸附与阻滞作用可以减少滤膜的污染,延长滤膜的寿命。
